Course description
The Anesthesia , Analgesia and Surgery course in mice and rats is characterized by a blended approach, which means that the participants will follow on site conferences, will attend lectures given via zoom, as well as a practical sessions on site, which will allow them to interact with experienced instructors and to learn basic principles of veterinary anesthesia and surgery.
E-learning modules will also provide the necessary study material that should be used in preparation for the exam and that supports the online sessions; the modules will remain available to the participants for at least one year after their enrollment to the course.
Procedures causing pain and discomfort in small rodents must be performed under general anaesthesia. Pain relief must be provided postoperatively and also needs to be provided to prevent pain associated with non-surgical procedures. This course will provide the latest information on laboratory animal anaesthesia and the most recently developed methods of pain assessment and alleviation.
Prerequisites and Selection
Prerequisite courses, or equivalent
Students need to complete the “Function A” laboratory animal science course (“to carry out scientific procedures on animals”), or must have completed an equivalent course.
Selection
Selection will be based on the relevance of the course syllabus for the applicant's individual study plan/research (need to use anaesthetic or surgical techniques in rodent models), which will be according to written motivation. If necessary, additional selection criterion will be used based on the date for registration as a doctoral student (priority given to earlier registration date).
