Health Literacy: Theory, Measurement and Research Methodology

Third-cycle level | 1.5 credits (HEC) | Course code: H1F6130

Course description

Health literacy is an expanding field of research of growing relevance across healthcare, public health, and policy. This course offers doctoral students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of current theoretical, methodological, and measurement-related developments in health literacy research.Participants will critically examine key concepts, theoretical frameworks, and measurement instruments used to study health literacy at both individual and organisational levels. The course addresses important methodological considerations, including the selection, translation, cultural adaptation, and validation of measurement instruments.

The course is organised as a Nordic collaboration between universities in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland and is open to doctoral students from universities worldwide. The international learning environment provides opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and discussion of health literacy research across different countries, disciplines, and research contexts. Lectures and seminars are delivered by leading international researchers and experts in health literacy theory, measurement, and methodology.

Through lectures, seminars, and applied assignments, participants will engage with current research in the field and reflect on how health literacy can be integrated into their own research. The course aims to strengthen participants' ability to critically appraise, apply, and communicate health literacy research.
