Course description
This course is designed to provide doctoral students (possibly also for postdoctors) with a solid foundation in pathology, covering essential topics such as cell injury, tissue repair, inflammation, cancer development, and classification. Through a comprehensive curriculum, students will gain an understanding of basic pathological events and their implications in disease development.
Throughout the course, students will learn to identify pathological tissues at the microscopic level and characterize their components compared to normal tissues. They will also develop proficiency in using imaging techniques for tissue analysis and conducting literature searches to integrate information on specific diseases. Additionally, ethical considerations in pathology will be addressed.
The course is divided into two main components. The first part focuses on theoretical aspects, including lectures, discussions, and interactive sessions with guest speakers. The second part involves practical digital microscopy sessions, where students will analyze tissue sections and participate in group projects to solve disease-related problems.
One unique aspect of this course is the opportunity for students to engage in discussions with experienced pathologists during the digital microscopy sessions. Furthermore, a guided tour of the Pathology Department will provide insights into the operation and processing of materials.
The course culminates in a final written examination, where students will demonstrate their understanding of tissue structures, pathological concepts, and practical knowledge gained throughout the course. Overall, this course offers a dynamic learning experience that prepares students for further research and clinical practice in pathology.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Pathology course and guiding you through your learning journey!
Requirements and Selection
Prerequisite courses, or equivalent
There are no prerequisites for the course, but basic knowledge of human biology/physiology concepts is required at the high school level.
Selection
Selection will be based on:
1) the relevance of the course syllabus for the applicant’s doctoral project (according to written motivation).
2) start date of doctoral studies (priority given to earlier start date).
