Course description
The course Medical Developmental Biology is an exchange course between Karolinska lnstitutet and University of Toronto, Canada. In 2025, the course will take place at KI, Solna. There will be 20 students and faculty joining the course from University of Toronto, which provide a great opportunity for KI students to network.
The nature of the course is translational and provides the opportunity to acquire a wide range of knowledge from transcriptional mechanisms to basic physiology, ethics and patient care.
The course focuses on the principles of developmental biology and how they are applicable to disease during early stages in live or later because of events or exposure during perinatal development. The course further aims to discuss ethical concepts and challenges of this type of research. The structure of the course is interactive research seminars on relevant topics by researchers from both universities. In addition, there are study visits and workshops within relevant topics.
A central aspect of the course is building longstanding international networks. There will be extensive social activities organized both by the teachers and two local KI students acting as social coordinators. This will include a reception at the Canadian Embassy.

Selection will be based on:
1) the relevance of the course syllabus for the applicant’s individual study plan/research (according to written motivation).
2) start date of doctoral studies (priority given to earlier start date).
