Course description

The course is an one-week full time international collaborative doctoral course, and is organised and operated within the KI Doctoral Programme in Cardiovascular Research (CVR). The course is developed from the annual joint doctoral course/summer school since 2012 of four international renown universities: Karolinska Institutet, Keio University (Tokyo, Japan), Peking University Health Science Center (Beijing, China), and King’s College (London, UK).

The course host and site rotates year by year among the four partner universities in four different countries. The course engages the experts and physician-scientists in AI research and clinical applications from all four partner universities, 2-4 lecturers/university. The number of course participants is fixed at 20, and 5 doctoral students are admitted from each university. The lectures covers a wide range of topics in AI science in medicine, from fundamental AI concepts, basic methodologies, to main AI applications in medical research and clinical care, and to ethical and societal considerations. The course features question-and-solution oriented team learning and presentation, and strong international learning environment and academic networking between and among course lecturers and students.

When the course is hosted by a partner university, doctoral students' international travel and accommodation will be arranged and fully supported by the course organisers and the host university. In another words, KI doctoral students' international travel to the host university will be fully covered.

Course application is open only for KI doctoral students, and 5 applicants will be admitted. The rest of course participants will be selected and admitted from the course partner universities (5 students each), Keio University (Tokyo, Japan), Peking University Health Science Center (Beijing, China), and King’s College (London, UK).

Selection and admission of course participants will be based on:

1) the relevance of the course syllabus, i.e., medical AI sciences, for the applicant's doctoral project (according to written motivation)

2) start date of doctoral studies (priority given to earlier start date)

Educational partnership

The course is an one-week full time international collaborative doctoral course with the educational partnership among Karolinska Institutet, Keio University (Tokyo, Japan), Peking University Health Science Center (Beijing, China), and King’s College (London, UK).
