Course description
The aim of the course is to introduce modern cancer care and treatment concepts in oncology in relation to translational cancer research to pre-clinical doctoral students, who have no or limited knowledge in clinical oncology. The goal is that the students in the future as pre-clinicians should be able to participate in treatment discussions, for example within Cancer Tumor Boards. A central part of the course is to highlight the practical significance of translational cancer research as well as clinical oncology through clinical visits. The students follow a clinical supervisor who is primarily specialized in the students' own research areas. The course includes clinical oncology, seminars and group discussions on translational research within the clinic, oncologic treatments and ethical issues in oncological treatment.
Learning objectives:
The students should understand, be able to discuss and reflect on:
• Evidence-based clinical management of cancer, the concept of individualized cancer treatment (personalized cancer medicine) and outcome assessments.
• Modern cancer treatment in relation to cancer biology.
• The path to conducting clinical trials as well as strengths/weaknesses in the field, and the importance of translational research and its challenges.
• The most important and fundamental questions that need to be solved in clinical oncology.
•Future goals in cancer prevention, diagnostics and treatment.
Forms of assessment:
The learning objectives are achieved through participation in the clinical visits/conferences and i the group seminars where the students have the opportunity to discuss and demonstrate their knowledge about the basics of personalized cancer medicine and translational cancer research. This includes the course assignments to be submitted and to actively participate in the group seminars. Participation in group seminars/discussions and clinical visits including are mandatory. Compensation at another time of occasional absences may be discussed with the course management.
Prerequisites and Selection
Prerequisite courses, or equivalent
